, RAINFALL IN THE SOUTH. BY TELEGRAPH —PKESS ASSOCIATION. TIMARU, January 17. Heavy rain fell throughout South Canterbury last night for some hour*--. Sixty-two points were regist?red in Timaru, and 47 points a few miles out. The rain will do great good to the pastures and crops, though it is somewhat late to benefit the cereals, a large proportion of which is alreadv harvested. CHRISTCHURCH, January 17.

There is a change in the weather to-day. Two hours' rain fell overnight, and it was showery again at 9 this morning.

The sky is again clear, with bright sunshine.
