The Special Coal Commission delivered an interim judgment in the Teralba dispute in regard to cavilling and the choosing of mates. The court inspects several mines and resumes its sitting a week hence. The resumption of work by the men following on the judgment is taken to indicate that fears uf a general strike have vanished. Mr Kavanagh, ex-president, raised a point whether the council was consistent in doing so. Delegates had, night after night, cried out in sup--port of arbitration, and when a union w,hich had an award became dissatisfied with it the men went on strike. The council decided to support them. TASMANIAN CABLES. EASTERN COMPANY'S TERMS DECLINED. Received January 10, 10 a.m. MELBOURNE, January 10. The Federal Government has declined the Eastern ' Extension Cable Company's terms in connection with the proposed purchase of the Tasmanian cable. Specifications for two new cables, to be laid before a certain date in 1909, have been sent Home by mail. (The Company is asking £39,000 for cables, buildings and balance of subsidy).
