Lord Roberts has appealed to the nation to subscribe funds to rescue the Crimean and Indian Mutiny veterans from the workhouse. His Majesty King Edward has become patron of the movement, and subscribed 1,000 guineas. The Prince of Wales, Duke of Connaught, and Prince Christian, are the vice-patrons. An extremely influential committee has been formed.
