CRICKET.

THE TEST MATCH. Received January 2, 9.28 p.m. BY TELEGRAM! —PRESS ASSOCIATION. MELBOURNE, January 2. For the greater part of the day the cricket was slower from a spectator's point of view than yesterday, but the last hour redeemed it completely owing to the exceptional brilliance of Hutchings, who made a glorious display, in which he made 18 fourers and one sixer. The fielding was fair and the bowling accurate. The attendance numbered 18,000. The wicket played well. Hobbs played a fine innings. He showed patience, and his defence was full of watchfulness. He gave one chance to MacArtney at square leg off Armstrong when the total was 122. Altogether he batted three hours and twentytwo minutes. In his score were eight fours. He shaped very much like Hayward, on whom he models his play, and of whom he is a pupil. Gunn, the Nottingham professional, was very dissatisfied with his leg before decision, and returned to the pavilion in a petulant mood. Altogether England are to be complimented for having dismissed Australia so cheaply on a plumb wicket, and in having established themselves SO' firmly at the wicket. Scores: — 1 AUSTRALIA.
