OTAGO v. AUCKLAND.
By 'TeliEGEaph—Press Association, AUCKLAND, January 2. The contest for the Plunkett Shield, between Auckland and Otago, commenced to-day, in fine weather. Auckland batted first, and were all" out for 267. The opening batsmen played attractive cricket, but the latter portion of the batsmen did not help to sustain interest in the game. WELLINGTON v. CANTERBURY.
By Telegraph—Press Association; WELLINGTON, January 2. There was a continuance of yesterday's heavy scoring, when the Canterbury v. Wellington match was resumed tq-day. Wood 1 and Patrick, the Canterbury not out men, carried. the total to 141 before the first, wicket fell, the latter being then bowled. Wood and Reese added 112, in the course of which Wood passed the century. Hickson was then put on, though he has never bowled before this season, and the remaining nine wickets fell for 113 more runs. Hickson took four wickets straight away for one run, and ended up with seven for 56. The total reached 366, the principal scorers being :—Reese 72, Patrick 51, Norman 47, Boxshall 21, extras 39. Upon Wellington going in the second time, Beecheyand Mahcny put up 135 for the first wicket. The latter was missed at' 31, and was eventually stumped when he had scored 59. Beechey is still in with 66 to his credit, and the total is 151 for one wicket. So far the' bowling and fielding have been much inferior to the batting. BY TELEGRAPH—PEESS ASSOCIATION. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 2. North Taranalu easily defeated the New South Wales teachers' team by 130 runs to 60 on the first innings. In the second venture Taranaki declared their innings closed at 95 for six wickets, and the visitors followed with 76 for four wickets when stumps were drawn. The visitors were taken on a trip to Mount Egmont on New Year's Day.
A match will be played on the Park Oval, to-morrow, between the Masterton Fire Brigade and the Borough Staff. The following are the teams:—Fire Brigade— T. Jenkins, C. A. Ewington, E.
