INDEPENDENT LABOUR LEAGUE.
ANNUAL CONFERENCE,
| BY TELEOHAI'II—MESS ASSOCIATION. OHRISTCHURCH, December 27. At the annual conference of the Independent Labour League, to-day, it was decided to delete "Independent" from the title of the organisation. A telegram welcoming Mr Keir Hardie was sent on behalf of the conference, t j A lengthy discussion ensued on the ] motion "that no member of the { Labour Party shall join any Ministry not mainly composed of their own party unless approved of by twothirds of the party in the House." The motion was negatived by 10 votes to 4. It was agreed that the League candidates for Parliament should have their expenses paid by the league; if returned candidates to pay 10 percent, of their salary to the League. Some of those who voted for the motion explained afterwards that they did so thinking that there would be an amendment to strike out the last clause. \ . A committee was appointed to draw up a fighting platform for the approaching general election. The Hon. J. T. Paul, in acknowledging the welcome extended to him by the conference, said that the most pressing necessity* before the workers, to-day, was that of organisation, as a united Labour Party could do more good than one divided into sections.
It was decided to send a letter to Mr J. A. McCullough congratulating him on his appointment to the Arbitration Court.
