MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

WORKS COMMITTEE. Crs J. Prentice (chairman" I ,® W. Morris ar.d A. Haughey attended the ordinary meeting of the Works Committee of the Borough ■Council,' last evening. The engineer reported that the work of erecting the tar boiler in the corporation yards in Hope Street was proceeding. The boiler was necessary for the manufacture of tar macadam, and the work of far paving for the footpaths could not be gone on with until the borough was in a position to make its own tar macadam. It was expected that the work of asphalting Lincoln road footpaths would be commenced in two or three days' time. The storage tank fpr increasing the water supply at the abattoir was now in course of construction. Mr Mansfield also reported that the Postal Department were making special efforts to place the telegraph posts in Lincoln road in line with the kerbing prior to the footpath being . The report was adopted.

The committee gave instructions for the consolidation of the loose stones in Chapel street, and for putting the road in order generally. A plan for draining the storm water from Renall street into the Makora creek in Queen street was approved of, and the engineer was instructed to have the work carried out. ' The committee decided to recommend the extension of the wattr main from South road into Devcn street. It was decided to recommend the council to lift about ten chains of the defective six-inch concrete sewer in Lincoln road and replace it by other concrete pipes of the same width specially manufactured' , for the nature of the ground in this street by the Masterton Cement Pipe Company. The engineer reported that he had had presented to ,him a request from thirteen borough employees that their wages should be increased from Is per hour to Is per hour. He had given the application his consideration under the resolution of the council that such applications should in the first instance be made to the officer under whose control the men are working. As for various reasons ho could not deal with the ihatter life asked the committee to do so. The committed, after considering the petition, decided to make no recommendation. Accounts amounting to £9l 15s 9d were passed for payment.
