A REMARKABLE TRANSACTION.
AN EXPERT'S TRAVELLING ALLOWANCES. REPORT OF A SELECT COMMITTEE. By Telegraph—Parliamentary Correspondent. WELLINGTON, Friday. In the House of Representatives, this afternoon, the committee to whom was referred the question of the travelling allowances of Mr G. V. Shannon, Customs expert, brought down its report, which contains no comment or recommendation. The report, after setting out its order of reference, proceeds:—The committee has taken evidence thereupon, and finds that Mr G. V. Shannon was engaged by the Atkinson Government under an agreement, dated October 30th, 1888, and signed by the Hon. George Fisher, as commission of Trade and Customs, which contains terms as follows: —You will be allowed pay at the rate of £BOO a year from November Ist next until June 30th, 1889, together with travelling allowance at the rate of 30s a day, whilst travelling on public service, including your stay at Wellington; and you will receive one-fourth share of all net proceeds of seizures and penalties recovered directly through your action. Under this agreement Mr Shannon claims that he was entitled to 30s per day all the year round, that this was intended to augment his salary, and, according to his evidence, he has drawn £1,340 a year. This amount represents £BOO a year salary and 30s a day allowances for every day of the year, including Sunday. In addition to that he has drawn£26o from fines." The report was ordered to lie on the table.
