INDISCRIMINATE USE OF WATER.

QUESTION OF FIXING METERS.

The question of taking steps to prevent the indiscriminate use of water in the borough occupied the attention of the borough council for a .short period last night. The works committee recommended that all water should be supplied through meters, and asked the council to give effect to this recommendation bdfore April Ist next. The object of the report was to prevent any waste of water, and not to restrict any use in reason. Meters were not required in every house, but it was stated that it was necessary that some residents should have a meter put on their supply. Cr Pauling moved the adoption of the report. Cr Ewington opposed the recommendation on the score of cost of meters. There was no necessity for meters as the council had an inspector to take action where there vas any waste. The money proposed to be spent in meters could be put to better use at the headworks. Cr Morris said there was no use trying to hide the fact that an enormous amount of water was being wasted. He knew that some people were in the habit of runnirg their hoses in the gardens all night.

Cr Elliott moved as an amendment that the recommendations of the com • mittee with regard to meters be deleted. His principal reason for so doing was because it was not desired that the recommendation should take effect till April Ist, and there whs plenty of time before .that date 16 think the matter over. The Mayor thought it would be better if the recommendation weie deleted. He seconded the amendment. Finally Cr Pauling, chairman of the committee, said he saw no odjection to the deletion of that part ot the report, and the amendment was put to the meeting and carried unanimously. . The ruport as amended was adopted.
