MASTERTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

HEADMASTER'S REPORT.

The following is the monthly report of the Headmaster of the Masterton District High School:—At- j tendance. —Main School: Roll, 595; average attendance, 522; i„erC3iitage of attendance, 88. Side School: Roll, 186; average attendance, 169; percentage of attendance, 91. Secondary Classes: Roll, 99; average attendance, 91; percentage of attendance, 91. With the exception of one or two wet days the attendance for the month has been good. For the quarter ended on the 30th ult. an excellent percentage of attendance was recorded. The Side School made 93 per cent., and the Main School and Secondary Classes 92 per csnt. each. The accompanying absentee report contains only five names. There are no bad cases. Two of the pupil teachers were absent, last week, through illness, and another is absent this week for the same reason. The current session 'of the Cookery Classes will terminate in about four weeks time, after which the senior girls will be free, ai# the proposed classes for advanced sewing can be inaugurated, ir. order to obtai i a grant under "The Manual and Technical Act," these special sewing classes will have to be conducted under the control of the Education Board, in the same manner as the £ookery classes are. If this is doiiOije classes could be made alsupporting, and no fee charged. I would recommend the Committee to ask' the Board to establish classes for advanced sewing (including dressmaking) on similar lines to the classes lor cookery. The fence on the eastern side "of the Side School front grounds ia very much out of repair. Fowls find their way through, and do a great amount of damage to the scholars' gardens. Ihe fence at the back of the girls' playground, at the Main School, is also in a bad state. A number of the posts have given way, and a portion of the fence will soon be down unless the posts are renewed or stayed. At the meeting of the School Committee, on Thursday evening, it wa3 decided to ask the Education Board to establish, classes for advanced sewing and dressmaking at the High School on the same lines as the cookery classes. The visiting members were instructed to attend to the fencing at both schools.
