Received October 4, 10.43 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 4. Miss Wray, of New South Wales, won the ladies' golf championship of Australia with a stroke of 268, Miss Parbury being runner-up with 280. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN FRANCHISE BILL. ( Received October 4, 9.47 a.m. ADELAIDE, October 4. The Government has agreed to take a referendum of Council electors on all points at issue in the Franchise Bill between the two Houses.
CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER. MAN SHOT IN THE STREET. Received October 4, 10.43 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 4. Mr Jones, General Superintendent of Railway Transportation, was shot while walking in Collins Street. His condition is serious. An exporter named Thomas has been arrested on a charge of attempted murder. EARTH TREMORS. Received October 5, 12.58 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 4. Several earth tremors were felt this evening at Yea; Nagambia and Seymour. Windows were broken and crockery rattled at Seymour, causing much consternation. The tremors lasted several seconds. GOODS TRAIN GOES OVER AN EMBANKMENT. /DRIVER KILLED INSTANTLY. FIREMAN DIES TWO HOURS LATER.
Received October 5, 12.58 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 4. A goods train, consisting of twenty trucks, an engine, and a guard's van, left the rails at Kilmore. The whole train, with the exception of the guard's van, rolled down a steep embankment. The driver, named Duke, was killed instantly. Cherry, the fireman, died a couple of hours later.
