THE COAL VEND. "RECKLESS STATEMENTS." Received October 4, 9.47 a.m. SYDNEY, October 4. A gentleman prominently connected with the coal industry, in a letter to the press, characterises the statements regarding the coal vend as reckless and without foundation, and declares that for the last ten years the proprietors had been practically giving their coal away at prices which in most cases involved loss, and so far from acting in any tyrannical way in raising prices, they were only taking a step which was just to themselves, and admit of trading operations showing a moderate return. He claims that the propneturs have a perfect right to appoint their own shipping agents for the handling of coal. THE NEW MAIL CONTRACT. Received October 4, 10.43 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 4. Several tenders have been received for the new mail contract. The tenderers are understood to include the Orient (Company, Sir James Laing and Sons, and the Australian Shipping Combination. STORM AT TENTERFIELD. Received October 4, 9.47 a.m. SYDNEY, October 4. A stonm at Tenterfield wrecked the railway engine-shed and show pavilion, ai»d unroofed and damaged many residences.
