MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
QUARTERLY RETURNS
The quarterly returns of the business clone at the Ma3terton Magistrate's Court shows that the total number of sittings held during the quarter was 60. The number of such sittings presided over by the Stipendiary Magistrate was 25, and by Justices of the Peace 35. The Stipendiary Magistrate heard 61 cases, and Justices of the Peace heard 4. The number of applications heard in Court or Chambers was 6, number of orders made (other than on judgment summons) 5, number of plaints entered 204, number of distress warrants issued 16, number of judgment summonses issued 19, num- j ber of orders made on judgment summons 8, number of warrants of committal issued 1, number of summonses served by the bailiff 203, number o± distress warrants executed by the bailiff 17, number of warrants of committal executed by the bailiff 3. The aggregate amount sued for was £1,973 17s Bd, and the aggregate amount recovered £1,251 ,16s lid. The amount of civil fees paid was £9O. The number of persons taken into custody, summoned or apprehended during the quarter was 183 (178 males and 5 females). Of these 24 males were discharged for want of prosecution or want of evidence, one case against a male was dismissed on the merits; four males were committed for trial; 135 (133 males and 2 females) were summarily convicted, and 18 (16 males and 2 females) were otherwise dealt with. The amount of criminal fees paid in stamps was £ls 19s, and the amount of fines paid in stamps was £4 4s.
