TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland,") Nominations for the Masterton Racing Club's Spring Meeting will close to-morrow nighfe, and something in the nature of a record list is confidently anticipated. The racing i track will probably be better than ever, and even if wet weather be experienced the going will be good, as there is now a decided fall, which carries the surface water away quickly. The plough gallop is now in •very satisfactory order, while the grass training track is being well top-dressed with a sandy loam. One of the latest improvements to the course is the erection of distance posts for the plough and grass gallop, which enables trainers to time their charges from correct distances. By winning the King Edward Handicap at the Hawke's Bay meeting Mr W. E. Bidwill's Elevation will come into stronger demand for the New Zealand Cup. He is engaged in the Hawke's Bay Guineas to be run to-day, and on form should win. If he does score his price for the big <'V2nt will be quoted at about 5 to 1. .Backers who had wagers booked at the longer odds at first on offer are on good terms with themselves, consequent on the colt's good form as shown at Hastings this week. The New Zealand Cup candidate, Mahuta, was taken down to Riccarton by his trainer, M. McGrath. The black colt brightened up considerably as the result of the races he ran at Levin and Bulls, and since his return to Opaki put in good serviceable work on the training track. .Admirers of the Mahaki colt's chance of winning at Riccarton next month will rest assured that at the hands of his trainer he will be given a thorough preparation. A good number of horses were worked on the Opaki ploughed track yesterday morning, and some _ good gallops were registered by candidates That are forward in condition. Sandix and Tattoo executed good working gallops. The Bluejacket filly skipped over half a mile in good style, while UUierin galloped a mile in a manner fhiit shows he is improving fast. Moccasin accompanied by the San f'""an gelding ran over five furlongs in ~, creditable manner. Merrie Rose :u;d Lucretius were each given six furlongs, and Royal Blue galloped owv two miles, finishing up well. :'i,.;rlock Holmes, Oakley, Moloch, .Research and Lady Flintlock were v.iven medium pacing, and St. Brandon went twice round. Thera and The Workman colt were allotted easy laslcs, and San Julie ran a mile in a taking style. Eclipse ran a mile and

a-half over hurdles, jumping quickly throughout. The filly by Merrie England—Minnie Palmer trotted and cantered twice round. The horses imported from England by Mr Gt G. Stead arrived by the Ruapehu on Saturday. They are highly spoken of as showing plenty of quality and style. Handicaps for the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap are due to-morrow. Probable, Hilarity, Cross Battery, Fireiron, Blythemaid, Bonny Glen, Harvest, Idealist and Rose Nople are among the horses that are doinc the best work at Riccarton. , Mr Thomas Ray, of Taratahi, has named his colt by Merrie England —Nai Nai. Merry Fly.
