INFECTIOUS DISEASES HOSPITALS.

LEVIES ON LOCAL BODIES.

A meeting of representatives from the various local bodies in the Wairarapa was held in the Masterton County Council Chambers, yesterday morning, to consider the amount to be paid by each body towards the upkeep of infectious diseases.hospitals in Masterton, Pahiatua, and Greytown. Dr. Frengley, District Health Officer, presided, and there were also present—Messrs J. M. Coradine, Masterton Borough; W. J. Welch, Masterton County; G. H. Perry, Castlepoint County; F. Kummer, Mauriceville County; M. J. H. Jack'son, Featherston County; C. J. KentJohnston, Featherston Town Board; W. Perry, Wairarapa South County; W. Moore, Carterton Boruugh; M. Ross, Maryborough Town Board; J. McCarthy, Pahiatua and Akitio Counties; M. Maxton, Greytown Borough; Thos. Moss, Eketahuna County; A. H. Herbert, Eketahuna Bcrough; D. Crewe, Pahiatua, B6rough. The Chairman explained that the parcentage of levies that each body would have to pay had been amended. The only alteration that had been made %vas that the contribution of the Masterton Borough had been reduced by 2 per cent, and the contribution of the Masterton County had been increased 1 per cent., making the former's contribution 24 per cent, and the latter's 11 per cent. The Maryborough Town Board's contribution had also been increased by 1 per cent. He also read a list of each body's contributions in actual cash, showing that the Masterton Borough would be asked to pay £222 19s 2 2-sd, and the Masterton County £lO2 3s 9 3-sd. Mr Ross protested against Martinborough's leavy on the grounds that the town was a great distance from the hospitals. Mr Welch objected to the Masterton County's assessment on the grounds that the County was scattered and, on account of had roads, access to the Hospital from the outlying parts was difficult. Mr Coradine considered that all the boroughs had been unfairly treated when population was considered. He contended that, with the new infectious diseases hospital in Mastertor, the thickly populated portion of tie Masterton County was more 'favourably situated in regard to the hospital than portions of the n Borough. He also considered that tie calculations should be based on tie present condition of affairs, not those which ruled previously. After further discussion and explanations by the Chairman, Messrs Welch and Ross withdrew their objections and a motion agreeing on the amounts to be paid by each body was carried unanimously. A resolution was passed affirming the desirability of a three-fifths majority of the delegates present being sufficient to carry the amounts to be paid by each local body, instead ot absolute unanimity as required by the Act at present.
