MASTERTON-WAIPUKURAU RAILWAY.
DEPUTATION TO THE ACTINGMINISTER FOR rUBLIC WORKS.
By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON. August 16. A deputation from Masterton and Akitio, accompanied by Messrs A. W. Hogg and R. B. Ross, M's.H.R., waited on the Acting-Minister of Public Works, to-night, asking that the Government should construct a loop-line of railway from Masterton to Waipukurau. The Minister said that no Railways Authorisation Bill would be passed this year. Therefore he could give no promise that the line could be undertaken for some time. He enquired if a light line would meet the requirements of the district or whether road construction by the Government would be of any advantage. The deputation thought it would be better to undertake a proper gauge line. Owing to the lack of metal in the district, the railway should precede roads. The Minister promised to secure a report from a Public Works official as to the feasibility of and the cost of a line.
