CANTERBURY FARM LABOURERS.
Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, August 5. The Canterbury Farm Labourers' apslication for an award came before the Arbitration Court this morning. Over seven thousand fanners from all parts of Canterbury were cited, and so many attended that the Court room was crowded out and the doors had to be locked to prevent the ingress of additional defendants. Mr W. Jones, President of the North Canterbury branch of the Farmers' Union, in the course of a lengthy argument, contended that there was actually no dispute between the farm workers and the employers, and that the case had been brought prematurely. The Court reserved its decision on the question as to whether a dispute actually existed or not, and the President stated that if it were held that the case was properly before the Court, the whole matter would be referred by the Court to the Conciliation Board for investigation and re port Mr Teschemaker, who represented the Canterbury Sheep Owners' Union, complained that his Union had been brought before the Court on matters that did not affect them.
