THE COMET.
Flammarion's comet is now visible in Masterton about 5 o'clock in the morning.
Comets are burning masses supposed to have been thrown off from tiie sun, or from othrr orbs in pretty much the same way as cur earth and the oilier planets were given their separate existence. The comets' tails consist of gaseous, or even rarer matter, interspersed with meteoric masses. Sometimes a comet is "lost," and astronomers suppose that it has been broken up entirely into such substances. Occasionally the earth comes in contact with the tail of the debris of a comet, and then we get a shower of meteor stones. Some'comets Delong to the solar system and their comings and goings along their great elliptical paths through space are known to astronomers. Hally's comet, for instance, is due to reappear next year. M. Flammarion's comet was not expected by astronomers, and the assumption is that it comes from beyond our system. A short scries of observations would enable this question to ba definitely settled.
