MASSACRE AT CASABLANCA
Received August ,1,, £.42 p.m. TANGIER, Auugust 1. A German ship brought to Tangier a large .number of Jewish refugees from -Casablanca. They declare that three tribes, angered at the new control of the Customs and the progress made with the harbour tramway works, entered Casablanca uttering threats to massacre all foreigners. A man,, claiming to haverbeen an eyewitness, declares that the tribes entered the town and proclaimed a holy war. Five Frenchmen, including a fireiran and foreman, named respectively Rata .and Masse, employed at the harbour works, two Italians, and a Spaniard were killed. The natives then DJllaged the European shops. _ The refugees escaped by bribing the soldiers guarding the harbour and the town gates. A later message states that ithe massacre occurred at noon. The natives after announcing that the tribes were about to enter and massacre the French workman, attacked the Frenchmen with clutss and knives and burned the corpses. It was 8 o'clock in the evening before the fugitives were able to leave the j. town ij LATER PARTICULARS. ! Received August 1, S-S0 p.m. TANGIER, Aaagust 1. Dr. Meuli, a Frenchman from Casablanca has reached Tangier. He states that many natives entered upon a pretext of selling corn. They .assembled at the harbour and iesulted !and killed the native guards. Thereupon some armed European workmen Sheared, i&t were instantly assailed gjid .massacre^. The captaiy of a German sfeip sts£es that the outbreak was due to the governor net taking precautions. Received August 1, 9.55 p.m. PARIS, August 1. j The cruiser Galilee has procceeded ! to CasabJanca. Received August 1, J1.33 p.m. LONDON, August 1. According to The Tribune, fifty armed Kabyle tribesmen were the authors of the massacre et Casablanca. The tramway workshops have been destroyed. Many workmen were killed, and their bodies mutilated. The tribesmen then returned to their villages. Received August 2, 12.23 a.m. j PARIS; August 1. M. Pichon's despatches confirm the massacre at Casablanca. The French Government have taken measures to assist the foreigners in case of need.
