THE SMOKE NUISANCE,

THE NORTHERN TERRITORY, i Received August 1, 10.15 a.m. SYDNEY, August 1. At the annual meeting of . the Chamber of Commtrce at Merivale, the president suggested that the Northern Territory might be handed oveir to Great Britain to be populated by natives of India. Without populati&a or even police outposts, and unconnected by telegraph, the Territory G-ifered an irresistible temptation to any foreign nation, which might be tempted to take advantage of England's absence or destraction. The danger of a black population was only real if it was not under proper control. Australia could secure the advantage of having a large tract peopled and governed not only by friends, but by her own kin. SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP. Received August 1, 10.15 a.m. SYDNEY, August 1. VisSiors to the river were treated to a good exhibition of rowing yesterday. Towns snd Webb, leaving their pace-makers behind, got together after passing Uhr's Point, and making a solid pace, kept on tenns till Henley was reached. Nearing the finish they put on a spurt, and finished together off eeerle's Monument Received August 1, 11.39 p.m. SYDNEY, August 1. A large crowd witnessed the final rows. Starting from Uhr's Point at 26 strokes a minute, which soon fell to 24, Towns and Webb chased the pacers to One, Man Wharf, where Towns stopped. Webb went on to the end of the course, spurting at the finish. His performance is considered to have been the best he has shown in public. There is an idea that the New Zealander has had something ''up his sleeve" for some time. MASONIC CONFERENCE. Received August 1, 10.30 a.m. SYDNEY, August 1. At a banquet to Masonic visitors, Mr Binns, Provincial Grand Master of New Zealand, warmly supported the idea of a conference of Grand Lodges of Australasia. He stated that New Zealand had resolved to send representatives to such a conference. THE WRECKED STEAMER YSABEL. Received August 1, 11.39 p.m. SYDNEY, August 1. The crew of the wrecked steamer Ysabel has arrived at Sydney. The Ysabel ran on a reef on the night of June 7th, off the Island of Namu. The crew landed in the morning and brought the stores ashore and proceeded to the Island of Britannia. The steamer Titus picked them up and brought them to Sydney. The Ysabel is hard and fast and almost dry at low water. It is considered that the vessel will become a total wreck. Two men were left behind to look after the stores and one hundred tons of copra which she has on board. A schooner has been sent to the scene of the wreck. DEATHS FROM WHOOPING COUGH. Received August 2, 12.30 a.m. SYDNEY, August 1. One hundred and seventy-seven deaths have occurred through whooping cough in the Metropolis during the last six months.
