STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. By Telegraph —Press Asscioation. WELLINGTON, July 9. In the House of Representatives, replying to Mr W. H. Field (Otaki), in regard to the Manawatu railway, the Premier said: "It must be obvious that the Government's first concern must be the conserving of the interests of the colony, and while the Government are quite willing to treat on fair terms a proposal to purchase, it will not be entertained at any value. It is not absolutely necessary that the Government should acquire the line for the purpose of carrying on the traffic, origin - ating on the Government lines, as it is recognised that aj suitable connection made for the diverting of the traffic to the Government lines. I recognise, however, that the Manawatu railway has been of considerable use aivl the owners are deserving of fair consideration should they desire to dispose of it."
