THE MAIL CONTRACT. Received July 4, 9.38 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 4. Mr Deakin states that the Laing Syndicate's contract has been cancelled because the additional bond of £25,000 was not forthcoming. The original bond of £25,000 is to be forfeited, though it is understood that the Government does not intend to deal harshly with the syndicate.

Mr A. Deakin, in reply to questions in the House, said that the Government had already taken steps to get the forfeited mail contract bond converted into cash. New tenders "would be called immediately and were returnable within three months. The new contract would provide for a specific time for building the steamers, and the penalty for failure to fulfil the contract would be double that in connection with the first contract. lj::j

CRIME IN MELBOURNE. Received July 4, 9.47 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 4. A constable surprised three burgJars in the cellar of a hotel at Brunswick. He watched until he had secured the services of a passer-by, and aroused the inmates. In the meantime the burglars cut their way through the bar floor. When the constable gained admittance he saw them escaping into the street. He fired three unavailing shots. The robbers secured no booty.
