SYDNBY COAL LUMPERS' STRIKE. NON-UNIONISTS ATTACKED. Received June 14, 10.17 a.m. SYDNEY, June 14. A party of coal lumpers attacked Ifree labourers at Blackwater Bay. Revolver shots were exchanged, ihut no one was hurt. .Several arrests were made. * THE MAIL CONTRACT. [Received June 14, 10.17 a.m. MELBOURNE, June 14. 'The mail contract taken up iby the (Laing,syndicate has developed another phase. Victoria has now agreed to contribute the whole of, the amount required io guarantee the debentures, with icertain stipulations which exclusively benefit Victoria. The conditions include: — • (1) A .first mortgage over the vessels to be built by the syndicate. (2) The guarantee to be inoperative tiU (eight steamers are built. (3) AM possible repairs and victualling to be done in Melbourne. (4) Victoria to have first call over 1,200 tons <of refrigerated space per vessel during the butter and fruit seasons. (5) Representation on the London and Melbourne boards of the syndicate. (6) Other States to have the right to join in the guarantee within six months on paying for per capita shares in the guarantee. Sir John Forrest announces that in connection with the mail contract the matter is one that cannot bs discussed and arranged between the States and the mail contractors: The Commonwealth will continue to devote itself to seeing that the terms of the mail contract it has entered into are carried out. NAVAL DEFENCE. Received June 14, 1C.26 a.m. SYDNEY, June 14. Mr Carruthere, State Premier, speaking at a mayoral dinner, denied that the Naval Agreement is unpopuar in New South Wales. If they were frae from the Federation they would do twice as much for the continuance of the protection the present agreement conferred. Received June 15, 12.41 a.m. MELBOURNE, June 14. Mr Ewing, in reply to Mr J.. C ar-ruthc-rs, says that there is nothing to prevent New South Wales from; doing what it likes with its own money in regard to the naval agreement;,, ' ' ~ ( "' '. JEWELLERY ROBBERY IN MELBOURNE. UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO OPEN A SAFE. Received June 15, 12.41 a.m. MELBOURNE, June 14. A pawnbroker's shop was broken into and £l5O worth of jewellery stolen. An unsuccessful attempt was made to open the safe of the National Food Company, containing a large "sum'of money.
