REVOLT IN CHINA.
THE OBJECT OF THE RISING,
FAMILY COMPELLED TO COMMIT SUICIDE.

The rebels near Swatow (a seaport of Kwangtung, with considerable foreign trade) captured a brigadiergeneral's family and compelled them to commit suicide by drowning themselves in wells. The rebels have issued a proclamation which declares that the object of the rising is to exterminate officials and overthrow the Government, and that it is not directed against foreigners or ordinary citizens. The Canton authorities have sent troops.
