MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. I The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held in the Borough Council Chambers, last evening. There were present The Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine), Crs J. Yarr, J. Prentice, J. C. Ewington, W. Pragnell, A. Haughey, W. Morris, F. W. Temple, J. Elliott, J. H. Pauling. A letter was received from the North Wairarapa Benevolent Society suggesting that Mr J. C. Ewington and Miss Munro be appointed Trustees in place of Messrs J. A. Renall and E. Feist, whose seats have become vacant. It was decided to accede to the request. A letter was received from the Wairarapa Employers' Association stating that at a meeting of the Holidays Committee, on Friday last, a resolution was passed that instead of following the lead of Wellington the Committee recommended that the Prince of Wales' Birthday, June 3rd, be declared a whole holiday, and requested that his Worship the Mayor woi IJ give effect to their recommendation. The matter was referred to the Mayor to give to. James McKee wrote claiming the sum of £55 for extra work done in connection with his contract in Colombo Road and Herbert Street. The claim was made up as follows: £25 for excavating soil on Colombo Road, £2O for extra ploughing and taking levels and grading both roads throughout and also sniftii g the , crown of the road three feet, £lO for expenses and damages through neglecting to pay him 75 per cent, on work done in monthly instalments according to agreement. Mr McKee waited on the Council in support of the petition, and fully explained his claim. Eventually it was decided that the matter should be referred to the Works Committee to confer with the Engineer and Mr McKee.

Mr G. Townsend applied to have his premises in Upper Cole Street connected with the drainage. The matter was referred to the Drainage Committee.

Mr W. S. Lett waited on the Council in reference to the refusal of the Borough Engineer to grant him a permit to erect a residence. The Engineer said that the Council had a by-law which stated that any building which was being built for a boarding-house must be built in brick. He had reason to believe that the house in question was being built for a boarding-house. Mr Lett aaid that the house was being built as a residence, not as a boarding-house. He was building the house for himself, and he would give a guarantee that so long as he possessed the house it would not be used as a boarding-house. Cr Morris moved, and Cr Prentice seconded, that the permit be granted. The motion was carried. Permission was granted to Mr F. A. Hosking to erect a septic tank in Hogg Crescent. Mr B. J. Dolan waited on the Council in support of the application. Mr E. Jones waited on the Council in reference to proceedings which it was proposed to take against an unlicensed cabman who had driven one of his cabs. The matter was referred to the Mayor and Town Clerk
