LONDON MARKETS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, April 7. Under date April sth, Messrs W. Weddel and Co. report as follows: — Lambs. —Arrivals during the fortnight amount to 22,550 carcases from Australia, 242,259 carcases from New Zealand, and 5,529 carcases from the Rivtr Plate. A spell of unusually warm, summer-like weather immediately prior to and during the Easter holidays created a welcome spurt in the demand, and the Easter lamb trade in 1907 was more satisfactory than for severral years past. Arrivals from Australia are now fall ing off, and the expansion in the demand is going a long way towards absorbing the natural increase in receipts from New Zealand, and the statistical position is better than the record of arrivals during the first quarter of the year might indicate. One of the main features of the market is the scarcity bf medium and heavy weight Canterbury lambs of prime quality, the few available commanding a considerable premium over prices of light weights, which with secondary 'ight weight New Zealands, are in plentiful supply. In consequence of the scarcity of the above particular weights, buyers have been forced on to corresponding weights of North Island lambs, the quality of which is. if anything, a trffle above the average; and for both Canterburys and North Islands of these weights, 'a rise of practically £d,per lb can be recorded. Prime Canterbury under 361bs are also firmer in sympathy with the other weights, but there is very little change to record in quotations of secondary lambs, which are experiencing a very poor demand at about late rates. To-day's quotations for New Zealand lambs are as follow Prime Canterbury 28-361bs s|d to 5Jd; 36-421bs, sfd to 5Jd; 42-501bs, 5Jd to s{jd; prime North Island*, 28-361bs, 4Jd tosd; 36-421bs, 5d to' Bid; 42-501bs, 5Jd to s£d. Secondary quality Canterbury and Norl'i Island may be quoted at 4Jd to 4fd per lb. The stocks of Australian lambs are now greatly reduced and firmly held, and with the improved demand and firmer tone of the New Zealand market, are selling at 4§d t > 4gd for prime quality, 4Jd to 4|d for medium quality, and 4Jd to 4Jd for secondary. River Plate lambs are selling at from 4sd to 4|d per lb.
