MASTERTON ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.

SUCCESSFUL CONCERT. There was a large attendance of the public at the first -concert of the season given by the Masterton Orchestral Society, in the Town Hall, last evening. The programme sub» mitted was an excellent one throughout, and was thoroughly appreciated by the audience. .All the items by the full orchestra were well rendered, the various instruments blending nicely. The opening piece was a march by Kuhne, entitled "Geburtstags—Ovation," which was rendered in good style. The overture,, "Nebuchadnezzar," by Verdi, was well played, excepting in the brass quartette portion, in which the conductor and the orchestra were not quite in unison. The echostuck for two cornet?, "Waldgrusse," by Messrs T. Rogers and R. Ward, was magnificently played, and was warmly applauded by the audience. The salonstuck, "Goldblohdchen," by the orchestra, was the best concerted number of the evening. The vorspiel, "King Manfred," although not conveying much to the unpractised ear, was an excellent item, ar.d the more it is heard the better it will be appreciated. The piccolo solo. "Bird of Paradise," by Mr J. Barrett", was undoubtedly the gem of the evening, and the performer was vociferously applauded, and had to respond to an imperative encore. The quartette "Melodeonkranz," by Messrs Candy and Chunn (clarionets), Mason (french horn) and Vamharn (bassoon), was a novel item, and was much appreciated, an encore being demanded. - The final item by the orchestra, a grand march entitled "Athalie," went exceedingly well.

The vocalist of the evening, Miss M. Sweetman, has a splendid voice of marvellous compass, and her two items "The.Better Land" and "A Song From Heaven," were both encored. The conductor, Mr Sydney Earee, conducted the orchestra in a capable manner, and the accompanist, Mrs F. Hunn, also contributed to the success of the concert.
