PLAGUE AT AUCKLAND.
AN OFFICIAL AxNNOUNCEMENT. The remaining little shadow of doubt about the cause of the two deaths in Auckland, last week. ;has been cleared away by the Health Department. Yesterday morning the Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister for Public Health, received a telegram from Dr. Mason, Chief Health Officer, now at Auckland, informing him that in connection with the two recent cases bacteriological examination had proved them to be plague. The first occurred in a lawyer's office in Queen Street, Auckland, and the second was a dressmaker employed in a room above the lawyer's office. This second case was discovered two days after the other. Both patients died, and the bodies were cremated. All contacts have been released. Extensive cleansing operations are progressing in the district. A MATTER FOR ENQUIRY. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 21. At a meeting of the Parnell Borough Council comment was made on the measures taken by the Health Department in connection with the recent case of suspicious illness. It was stated that Miss N. McMillan, one of the victims, was in a very weak sate of health and had only recently returned from the Cambridge Sanatorium. Her relatives were of opinion that she died of fright on being placed in an ambulance. Several councillors stated that it was a matter that should be-; enquired into. It was decided to defer consideration till a future meeting of the council. No further cases of septicaemia are reported. Workmen are busily engaged in cleaning operations, and the owners of several warehouses have commenced the destruction of rats. An inspection of the city sewers has been started. The house quarantined since the death of Miss Kitchen has been thrown open and the occupants released.
