MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Mr W. P. James, S.M., occupied the bench at the Masterton Magistrate's Court, yesterday morning. Before the Court sat for the hearing of ordinary cases, the Magistrate held a sitting of* the Juvenile Couit. A lad, named John Hayes was charged with having stolen, at Greytown on April 15th, a parse of the value-of 2s 6d and 13s 9d in money, the property of Henry Brabender. He was also charged with having stolen a pair of boots, valued at 20s, the property of Alex. Cameron. Accused's father stated that the boy had left home and gope to Greytf'wn to work. The boots and purse had been restored, and he promised to pay the money back. .The Magistrate ordered the hqy to be placed on probation for three months, and to receive twelve strokes of the birch rod. He also ordered the 13s (3d to be returned to Henry Brabender. Frank McCurdy and Thomas Maloney were charged with having behaved in a disorderly manner whereby a breach of the peace was caused in Street, on April 20th. Sergeant Miller, Constable Egan and William Wilkes, deposed to seeing, the two,accused fighting near the Queen's Hotel on the evening in question. Maloney appeared to be the worse for liquor. McCurdy, who pleaded not guilty, stated that s4aloney persisted in annoying him, and he was at last forced to hit him. The Magistrate dismissed the information against McCurdy, and fined Maloney 20s with 9 s costs. Stanley Allan Hansen pleaded guilty *to a charge of having left two horses attached to a vehicle unattended, and was fir.ei ss, with "7s costs.

Alexander Smith was charged with a breach of the borough by-laws by plying a cab for hire without having a drivers' license. Defendant did not appear, but his employer, E. Jones, pleaded guilty on his behalf. A fine of ss, with 7s costs, was imposed. Charges of havkg failed to connect their premises with the borough system of drainage, preferred against Mrs Braggins ana Henry Thompson, were adjourned until May 9th. ; Information was laid by Tobias Miller against C. Y. Dally for having falsely applied to a bottle of alleged creo3oted lung balsam, the registered trade mark of the informant. The hearing ot the case was adjourned until to-day.
