EKETAHUNA, Monday.
The Tararua Rifle Club concluded the competition for Mr H. T. Wood's trophy on Saturday, last The conditions of the trophy were three shootings, the two highest to count. The winnsr was Mr R» Thomassn, with a score of 105, J. Petersen being second with 104, and 0. A. Olsen third also with 104. The scores were . as follow :• -
Tuesday. The local branch of the New Zea land Farmers' Dairy Union Butter Factory is nearing the close of a very prosperous season. The amount of butter fat supplied by the various skimming stations in the district has exceeded that of previous seasons, Rongomai being the largest supplier. This factory compares favourably with the best in the colony for the quality of its butter, three prizes having been secured atjj the Palmerston North Winter Show consecuti -ely. The milk test has been up to tns usual average for the season. Work in the building trade has slackened. There are not many new buildings being erected here. At a meeting of the Committee of the Farmers' and Commercial Club, held last night to select a suitable custodian for the Club premises, Mr Tnos. Priest was selected out of a large number of candidates. * The linemen connected with the Postal Department are engaged erecting new telephone wires to the local office. Several new subscribers are being connected. There is some talk of forming a Bush Athletic Union amongst the different schools, with the object of fostering and promoting athletic sports and competitions principally for the berefit of the school children in the Bush district.
Mr S. Marenzi, a local rifleman, has gone to Trentham to compete in various events.
The local public library now has something like one thousand of the latest books on its shelves, including the work of tiie best writers. Eleven new books were added to this fine collection last month. The Eketahuna terminating Building Society have just held a paynight, when a large amount was received from shareholders. This Society is now in a ,very flourishing •condition, and this reflects great credit upon the energetic secretary, Mr R. J. McLean.
