MASTERTON BAND SPORTS.
The Masterton Municipal Brass, Band held a sports meeting on the Park Oval, yesterday * afternoon and evening, for the purpose of raising funds in connection with the band's proposed visit to Christchurch. The gathering was a successful one. There was a fair attendance in the afternoon. Numerous children's races were decided, and there were also wrestling competitions for boys. The attendance in the evening was much larger, when the bicycle and principal flat races were decided. The events proved interesting. Mr G. Groombridge gave a skilful exhibition of slack wire walking. Considerable interest was centred in the baby show, for which there were thirteen entries. The prize was won by Mrs Doughty's baby, the band was present during the afternoon and evening, and rendered a number of selections. ' Mr F. O'Connor proved himself to be a capable secretary, and left no stone unturned to ensure the success of the gathering. Mrs Doughty's baby 1, Mrs Lee's baby 2, Mrs Pickering's\baby 3. Eastest Skipper.—Queenie Fox 1, G. Newton 2, M. McKenzie 3. - One Mile Bicycle Race.—J. Faulkner 1, J. Devenport 2. One Mile and a-Half Bicycle Race. —J. Devonport 1, J. Faulkner 2. 100 Yards Flat.—F. Coles 1, V. Richards 2. 220 Yards Flat.—F. Coles 1, W. Bannister 2. The Fire Brigade events resulted as, follows: — ■ ' Two-men Coupling Competition.— E. Braggins and E. McEwen (time 45Jsec, including 4sec penalty), 1; T. Jenkins and E. Hooper (time 51 jsc, including 4sec penalty), 2; Tl Fielding and E. . Warner (time 53sec), 3. H. Selby and F. Jackson (time 59sec, including ssec penalty); Jackson and Callender, .Carterton (time 59|sec, including ljsec penalty) ; E. McKenzie and Stove, Carterton (time 62 4-ssec, including 8 sec penalty) also competed. Five-men Hose, Hydrant and Union —Masterton Municipal A team,, 38sec, 1; Carterton, 50J sec (including 4sec penalty), 2; Masterton Municipal B team, 60sec, 3. Branchman Pickering (Masterton) and Secretary Campbell (Carterton) acted as judges, and Messrs J. O'Meara and E. Mercer were the timekeepers.
