MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE. ' The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Works Committee was held last evening. The Mayor presided, and there were also present:—Crs J. Elliott, J. H. Pauling, F. W. Temple, T. G. Hoar, W. Morris, E. G. Eton, J. C. Ewington, E. Feist and E. McEwen. The Manager of the Abattoir wrote stating that the hot weather had made it necessary to kill at the Abattoir on Sunday instead of Satur- j day, and that arrangement would be continued until the end of February. However, owing to consignments of pigs having been received to slaughi ter for the Carterton Bacon Company, the butchers have had to work seven days a week for two weeks past. He proposed that the men should be paid for overtime for the extra days at the following rates:—Two butchers at Is 3d per hour, one assistant in slaughterhouse at Is per hour. It was decided to pay the men for overtime at the rate proposed by the manager, provided it is admissible under the Act. With regard to the proposed gas the new hospital buildings, the gas manager reported that the distance from the junction of the Te Ore Ore and Opaki Roads to the hospital gates was 21 chains, and the main would require tojbe a three-inch cast iron one, the estimated cost of which was £lls. From the Te Ore Ore road to the hospital buildings was a distance of 14 chains, and if threeinch' c.i. pipes are laid the cost would be £7O. If a two-inch w.i. pipe is laid the cost would be £SO. Including the supply of gas meter, etc., the total estimated cost would, be about £2OO. The revenue that would be derived from lighting- the new buildings would probably not exceed £6O per annum. It was decided to grant the application of the Hospital Trustees for the gas, provided the Trustees also installed gas cookers in the building. Mr G. Heron wrote drawing the Council's attention to the footpath that was being formed in front of his premises in Church Street. It appeared, to be about a foot higher than the old footpath, and it would seriously lessen the value of his interest in the property. He hoped the Council would see its way to modify the nuisance otherwise he would be compelled to take legal action in the matter. decided to allow the matter to stand oyer until the Works Committee, who were given power to act, had visited the locality. During the course of a report the Engineer estimated that the cost of kerbing and asphalting Victoria and William Streets would be £6OO and £l5O respectively. Regarding the South Road drainage to remove surface water on his road, three culverts were required. The , cost of the drainage of Bentley Street would be £229 10s. The Engineer asked for instructions as to how far he was to continue, the fence being erected along the Waipoua River bank on the land recently handed over to the Council by the Education Board. As part of the Bentley Street groin had fallen into the river, the Engineer advised that the groin be repaired to prevent the river cutting into Hope Street* He further reported that he had 1 authorised the extension of the drainage from the end of the sewer in Villa Street to the sewer which was being constructed by the Renall Estate on the Ngamatawa Block. The Engineer was ; instructed to effect improvements in Victoria and William Streets by spreading fine gravel over the footpaths. The work of repairing the Bentley Street groin was ordered to be carried out. The matter of continuing the fence along the Waipoua River bank near the Park was referred to the Park Committee. The question of Bentley Street drainage was allowed to stand over until after March 31st. The Council endorsed the Engineer's action in authorising the extension of the drainage from the end of the sewer in Villa Street to the sewer on the Ngamatawa Block. It was decided to invite tenders for the work of kerbing Renall Street. The channelling of Chapel Street was allowed to stand over until money was available to do the work with.
