CENSUS RETURNS.

WELLINGTON, January 10
To-night's Gazette contains the summarised results of the census taken in April last, as to the religious denominations of the people. The total population of the colony, exclusive of Maoris, was 888,579, and for religious purposes 886,694. The various denominations are given as follows: Church of England and Episcopalians not otherwise enumerated, 366 1 ,828, increase 52,804; Protestants, undescribed, 1,237, increase 2; Presbyterians, 203,597, increase 27,094; Methodists, 89,038, increase 12,857; Baptists, 31,086, increase 2,748; Roman Catholics, 126,109, increase 17,149; Hebrews, 1867, increase 256; Salvation Army, 8,369, increase 390; Brethren, 7,901, increase 417; Church of Christ, 7,061, increase, 956. The following totals also appear:—No religion, 1,600; Atheists, 101; Freethinkers, 3,116; Agnostics, 734; no denomination, 5,416; object to state, 24,325; unspecified, 1,884.
