FOREIGN MARKETS.

OPENING FOR NEW ZEALAND ' MEAT, At present an agitation is being conducted in Germany for relaxing the restrictions imposed on foreign meat importations. A recent article in the Kolr.ische Zeitung, forwarded by the High Commissioner to the Premier (Sit Joseph Ward), deals exhaustively With the subject. After examining the possiblities of trade with various meat-exporting countries, it makes a lengthy reference to New Zealand:—"ln the country itself tlfere is no mighty price ring which nearly throttles the individual ' trader. The farmers help each other, and rely on the support of the State, which is not denied to them, as both Australia and New Zealand, as is also the case with Germany, ; witness the highest ■ development of this State management. It

has become clear to the farmers, after twenty-five years' " experience in the preparation "and shipping of j frozen meat, that -they must, above all, devote themselves to the maintenance of a good quality article, and in order to do this more effectually, they devote themselves to raising good pasturage, which will be available during the whole year. For the home market as well as for export stricter slaughterhouse regulations are -in force. Every such establishment is, as in England, subject to the most rigorous State inspection, and both before and after slaughter every aninial is thoroughly examined, and all unfit rejected. The rules referring to the cleanliness of stockyards, the caution regarding slaughtering and packing, the kind of packing adopted and the care with reference to pieces are worked with a thoroughness and so strictly adhered to that even in Germany the state of affairs could not be improved upon. The inspection at the place of shipping and even in London, is superintended by two officials whq are thoroughly conversant with, the meat trade." These extracts* a l on e should give New Zealand Exporters food for reflection.
