LOSSES THBOUGH LOW FREIGHT. RISK ATTENDING MAIL CON- .* TRACTS. Raceiv'ed December 14, 7.40 a.m. LONDON, December 13. At the meeting ot the Peninsular and Oriental Company, Ur Thos. Sutherland, the chairman, stated that the mail companies had lost between £90,000 and j6100,000 on butter freights alone. Regarding the new mail contract, Sir Thomas Baid it was not the first time in the history of Australia that an outsider had rushed into a mail contract which an experienced/company like the P. and 0. had declined, and history had recorded that the result was serious disaster.
