ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

RICHARDSON 1 BEFORE THE COUKT.

William Richardson, who was arrested on a charge of attempting to commit suicide by cutting his throat | with a razor, oa Monday evening last, in the Occidental Hotel, appeared before Mr VV. P. James, S.M., at the Masterton Magistrate's Court, on Saturday morning, and pleaded not guilty. Winifred Stewart, barmaid at the Occidental Hotel, deposed that on the nignt. iu question she waa sneaking to the accused, who made some remarks about another girl employed at the hotel, and with whom, lie said, ho had had a difference. Accused appeared worried t and 'said he would do away with himself. He went into the bar parlour, and witness hoard a fall, and looking around she saw the accused on the floor. She summoned the lioensee of the hotel, and it was discovered that accused's throat waa out. Jeremiah O'Moara, licensee of the Occidental Hotel, stated that he found the aooused on the floor of the parlour, and with a cut in his throat. Heside him on the floor was a razor. Or Oook stated that he attended the accused, and arided that the wound was not dangerous. The girl with whom it was said acoused had had a difference was next called, and on stepping into the witness box she tainted. Howover, she was sotan revived. She gave her name as Nora Punch, and said she had known aooused for about two years. Latterly there had been some differences between them. She saw bim on Monday night and told him not to come near her again. He promised to do as aha bade him. Accused said he did not remem« ber anything of the affair until he was told on the following.day. He asked to #e treated leniently, and assured tho Magistrate that he would not attempt such an act again. The Magistrate admitted the accused to probation,for six months, and ordered him to pay expenses amounting to £2 7s.
