THE BOMB EXPLOSION IN ROME.
APPARENT OBJECT OP THE CRIME. GENERAL FEELING OF INDIGNATION. A REWARD OFFERED. Received November 20, 8.23 a.m. ROME, November 19. * The bomb, which exploded in S. Peter's Churoh, was placed under a scaffolding erected behind Oanova's celebrated tomb of Pope Clement XIII. Though the scaffolding smouldered.for a moment, the tomb was uninjured. A long fuse was employed, allowing the criminal to leave the building unnoticed. The bomb consisted of a large tin box goohtaining two pounds of gunpowder, and three pounds of nails, which were seven inches long, and so fieavy that the powder, was unable to throw them far. The bomb was wrapped in newspapers of recent date, and green leaves, suggesting tnat it was prepared in the country. The Pop« was engaged in devo t«ons at the Vatioan when the explosion occurred. When he was assaredjthat the Basilica was uninjured he fell on his knees, imploring mercy for the criminal. Afterwards he received and conversed with several hundred persons in the Throne-room.
Tbe outrage has caused intense indignation. The Italian Minister of tbe Interior has offered a reward of a thousand lire (£4O) for the discovery of the perpetrator. Tbw box had been originally used for tinned food.
