/I'HE NEW HEBRIDES. NEED'OF PROHIBITION. Received October 26, 9.15 a.m. SYDNEY, Ootober 26. The officers of LI. M.S. Pegasus declare that the prohibition of liquor is essential for the pacification of tbe JJew Hebrides, the natives being deadulterated gin. Large numbers of British settlers are swearing allegiance to France and hoisting the tricolour on their schooners. The Pegasus met a French oruiser at Tanna, and steps were taken to bring about friendly relations between the different tribes. About 600 armed natives were called from three different villages, brought before a landing party, headed by the oaptains of the two warships, and informed that they must oease fighting. Failing that they would be severely punished. The action appeared to have a good effect, and the trouble expected io connection with the landing of the natives d«ported from Queensland will, it is hoped, be averted.
