THE NORTHERN APPROACH.

COUNTV COUNCIL'S ACTION CKITIOiSEU.

A letfer received by a Masterton firm of auctioneers from tb£ ton County Council with regaid to the olosing of tbe northern appioach to Masterton against cattle traffic between the Hours of X3O a.m. and C pm., was placed before.the meeting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The letter stated that the danger arising from the oougasted state of tbe traffic at the northern approach wbon stock sales were held in the Waipoua sale yards had been brought under the notice of tbe Counoil in a somewhat prominent manner recently. The road was largely used by pedestrians, and much of tbe ri*k arose from the driving of cattle to Hnd from tbe yards at all hours of the day. The Council, under these circumstances, was of opinion that Bteps should b8 taken to remove tbe saleyards to some mure suitable locality, and crusted that the Arms and associations interested in them would confer together with a view to this being given effect to. Unless pteps were taken in the direction indicated tbe Council would bo compelled to consider the question of making a by-law prohibiting the driving of cattle over the Gouuty bridge between the bouts of 7.30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Several members adversely criticised the action of the County Council, and finally the following resolution (proposed by Mr Daniell hutJ Beounded by Mr Moodie) was carried unanimously:—*'l'hat this Chamber regrets to find that the Masterton Coaoty Oounc'l is so shortsighied, as indicated in the circular letter, as to place obstacles in the way of business by its threat to close the main arterial roads against the traffic of its own ratepayers as veil as prejudice the best interests o all traders in the community."
