MASTERTON PUBLIC LIBRARY.
GRANT MADE BY THE TRUST LANDS TRUST. Ore Elliott and MoEwen, tempers of the Masteftbn Borough Library Committee, waited on the Masterton Trast Lands Trustees, last evening, in aupport of a letter asking the Trustees for financial .assistance towards the Library. The deputation pointed out that the Library Committee was Borely in need of funds at present, and the Committee had not received any grant from the Trust since March, 1902. On April Ist, 1906, the Committee had ,a. dr. balance of £IOB. The annual expenditure was as follows:—Salaries, printing and advertising, £115; fire and lighting, £113; books and periodicals, £130; total, £358 The estimated assets were as.follow.-—Kates, £170; rents, £109; subscriptions, £BS; Government subsidy, £l6; total, £3BO. The state of the reading room would practically speak for itself. Jt wan totally bare, and not fit for persons to visit. The only furniture in the room was about two dozen. ohalrs. The present Committee had commenced operations with a debit balance, and they bad only been able to spend £1 per month on books. The Committee proposed to erect a bench around the reading room, and supply more ohairs. The full library rate bad been struck, and there was no other chance of raising funds unless they obtaifed an increased number of subscribers. This could not be done unless an increased number of books were purchased. The deputation hoped that the Trustees would see -their way to give at least £IOO this year. After the deputation' withdrew the Trustees decided to grant the Committee £SO. Mr Daniell favoured granting '£2s only.
