LONDON MARKETS.

(Prom oar London Correspondent.) LONDON Jane 1. The Colonial Consignment and Distributing* Company Limited report under date Jane Ist: ~, There is not much change to be reported in the condition of the market generally, and a iair amount of trade is being done. Beef of all descriptions has met a rather better enquiry and shows some improvement in value. English and Scotoh sides have advanced to sJ£d td s&d per lb. and 5%d to , 6d per lb. respectively and are firm. North Amerioan Chilled Hinds now made up to 5%d per lb. against a top quotation of 5%d a week ago. Fore quarters however show little change. South American Chilled Beef is steady at last prices, say 3%d to 4d per lb. for hind quarters and. 2%d to 2%d per lb, for fores.,' ~. *..' ~ .;.' ~;,';'.,.' -,].' English and Scotch Mutton continues dear at prices which range from to 1% per lb. for the former and 8d to per, lb. for, the latter, but at these figures the moderate supply is only meeting with ajalow sale. Home-bred Lam bis gradually getting cheaper and is now quoted at I%A to 9j£d per lb., and the Continental Lambs range from 7J£dtoßd. New Zealand Mutton.—Stocks have been replenished by tbe arrival of Jtbe "Pakeha," "Ruapehu," and" Star of Sootland," with a total of 79,809 oaroases. Buisness in this section is still distinguished by unnecessary competition amongst holders, and it is difficult to account for tbe anxiety evinced by some sellers to inorease their output at the expense of quotations. Faint indications of a little better tone oan be detected at the finish, but prices show no quotable change. Canterbury sheep range in ; value from per lb., but do not show much superiority in quality over other brands. North Islands can be bought easily at 3%d for light oaroases and for heavy sheep, and there is rather more uniformity in the quotations of the various sellers. South Amerioan Mutton.—Arrivals druine the week consist of "Kelvindale," "Amiral Sallandrouze," "Kent, ' "Heraclides, and "Highland Harris, bringing a total of 84,525 carcases. London prices have been held steady on a parity with those ruling for North Islands, but the volume of business dona has not been large. ' The Provincial Markets are slightly easier, but fair quantities are being moved at prioes which are still equal to London. Australian Mutton.—The Arrivals have been very light, coDPistins only of 1,214 oaroases per "Marathon,"and 4,487 carcases per "Langton Grange." The small stocks are firmly held for 3%d to 3%d, and there is ,no difficulty in making these prices for limited quant : ties of good small carcases.

New Zealand Lambs.—Large shipments are now coming to hand, and the heavy arrivals last week have been followed by a further quantity of 369,877 carcases. The demand cannot be considered other than satisfactory, and there is a general feeling that, If maintained, it cannot fail to influence prices before long. Australian j3toons are praotioally exhausted, and ' the absence of this competition has already improved the value of tne inferior New Zealand oaroases. The buttom price for plain North Island Lambs is now 4>£d per lb.,

but the better grades remain at per lb. For the beat Canterbury Lambs 5d per lb. is now being asked, and for medium carcases 4%d is the bottom figure. Frozen Beef.—Receipts oomDrise 6,299 quarters from New Zealand, 1,200 quarters from Australia and 46,037 quarters from South America. New Zealand bind quarters are short, and have found a better enquiry at 3%d per lb., but Plate hinds are plentiful and show less improvement at 2%d to 3d per lb. Fore quarters show no change in value for either description. MARKET QUOTATIONS. English mutton (wethers), June Ist, 1906, to 1%6 per lb. corresponding period, 1305, s>£d to 6>od per lb.; Sootoh mutton (wethers), 8d to y 2 d to Dutch mutton, None, 5%d to New Zealand (Canterbury), 3iid to 3%d, 4d to 4%d; New Zealand (North Island), 3J4d to 3>£d, 3%d to 4d; Australian, to 3%d, 3d to 3%d; South American to 3>£d, 3d to New Zealand lamb, 4J£d to sd, 5%d to 5%d; Australian lamb (N.S.W. & Vict.), 3%d to 3%d, 4%d to sd; Australian lamb (Adelaide), to 3%d, 4%d to sd; English beef (sides), s}£d to 5%d, s}£d to %d; Sootoh beef (sides), s>£d to 6d, 5%d to 6d; North American beef (hinds), 5d to 5%d, 4%d to North Amerloan beef (fores), 3d to 3%d, 3d to 3%d; New Zealand beef x hinds), 3% J » 3 % d ; New Zealand beef (fores), 2&d, to 2%d; South American beef (hinds), 2%d to 3d, 3%d to 3%d; South American heef (fores), to
