BOROUGH WORKS.
REPORT BY THE ENGINEER. The Engineer reported to the meeting of the Masterton Borough Works Committee, last evening, on. the various works carried out in the Borough during the month, as follows:—The worfc of clearing watertables has been uontinued during the last four weeks, but Beutley, Villa antf Victoria streets still remain to be done. Wages have been incurred principally aa follow:—Maintenance £B2 6s 2d, scavenging £22 17s 6r), Park £l3 9s 6d, street-lighting £9 Os 9d. Out of the loan works £46 Os 3d has been spent on the Makora Creek and 13a on the Colombo road bridge. The work from the bottom of Mr Maßon's residence to Colombo Road was finished on Friday last, thp WBges paid to date being £64 !6s lid. The expenditure on water works account is £4 9a 7d, on drainage £27 17s 3d, and on the abattoir loan aooounfc £27 15s lOd. The surplus soil on the ground in Church Street has been ploughed, and is being taken away by various parties, who require soil. I would draw the Council's attention to the necessity of providing water mains for the roads in the Cole and Ben all Estates, also Hessey Street. I would suggest that in future all verandahs to be erected over footpaths shall be oallnosed in place of having flat or sagged roofs. In most oases this is done voluntarily by the owners, bat in a few oases the owners prefer to use flat op curved iron. The portion of Akara Road, immediately above the railway line, is in a very bad condition, the low part opposite Levien's cottage always forming a pond in rainy weather right up to the oottage. Immediate steps should be taken to provide against this, and to fill up the low portion of this road. Plans and specifications of the contract for the stop bank at the head of the Park ten acres, also for the culverts in Makora Creek are submitted for approval." With regard to the water mains in the roads in Cole and Renall Estates, it was decided to defer consideration until the next Connoil meeting. It was deoided to carry out the work cf putting in mains in Hessey Street, the cost of which was estimated by the Engineer at about £35 to £4O. It was resolved to carry out the recommendation of the Engineer with regard to bullcosed verandahs wherever practicable. With .regard to the embankment along the Waipoua River to protect the Park, it was decided to commeuotf the work at the end of Dixon Street and carry it along the river adjoining the ten acres. The report was adopted.
