UNITED FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.
COLONIAL CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, May 21. The Colonial Conference of the United JFriendly Societies of New Zealand opened to-day. The President, in his address, said that thirty-seven delegates were present, representing Orders, and six representing Counoils. Eleven of the Orders representee! had forty-five thousand and funds amounting to £BUU,OOO. They annually dispensed £73,000 in connection with sick and funeral funds, and £42,000 for medical a£' tendance and medicine. The Conference was tha most representative ever held in the colony. Two important subjects for the Conference were the amending of the Friendly Societies Act and the matter of setling up a Colonial Federation. The Conference would have to oonsider the possibility of a uniform scale of contributions, of larger death payments than the law allowed, and an improved meano of investing lodge funds by allowing lodges to send small balances to central bodies. The Government's soheme of national annuities should receive attention from the Conference in order to see if it would clash with the work of the societies. It was resolved that tbe voting be on a proportional basis.
