THE NORTHERN APPROACH.

MATTER BEFORE] THE BOROUGH COUNCIL. A letter was received at the meet* ing of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, from the Masterton County Council, stating that as the Borough Council had refused to instruct the Borough Engineer to formulate a soheme for the improvement of the northern approach, the County Council took it is an indication that the Borough Council did not seriously consider that there was any urgent necessity for uadertak lug, at a considerable oost, the improvement in question. The proposal 1 did not emanate from the County Council at all. It was, bo'wever, recognised by the County Council that at some future date the road leading into Mastertoa from that direction would require widening, and the Council some time ago had secured for this purpose an additional half-chain in width from the Diver's Corner to the borough boundary. The Mayor, stated that the Borough Council had only refused to allow the Borough Engineer to do the work alone within the County boundary. He moved that the Town Clerk be instructed to contradict the letter accordingly. Cr Ewington, in seconding the motion, thought that the borough Council had power to force the County Council to bear their share of the work, together with the Maurioeville and Oastiepoint County Oounoils. If the County Council refused to take the initiative, and if they were throwing every obstacle in the way at present, the Borough Council should force their hands. The SohoolOommissioners had given half an acre for the purpose of widening the approach,, and he thought it was the duty of the Borough Council to see that the work was carried out. Cr Temple asked the Mayor ifthe Council were not perfectly willing to allow the Borough Engineer to work with the County Engineer in formulating a soheme for the work. The Mayor replied in tha affirmative, and the motion was aarried.
