A deputation, representing ten thousand artisans, protested' to Lord Selbonrne that tbe repatria tion facilities ailoweJ to the Chinese would be likely to throw idle seven thousand whites. They claimed that similar facilities should be extended to unemployed whites. Lord Selbourne siid that the Go vernment did not wish to dislocate the industry but discontented ooolies must be repatriated.
