MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
SPECIAL MEETING. A speoial meeting of tne Masterton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. There were present: Tbe Mayor (Mr J. A. Renall), in the cnair, Crs J. C. Ewingtou, W. Morris, T. G. Hoar, J. Elliott, P. W. Temple, J. H. Pauling. Au apology for absence was received from Cr MoEwen. The speoial order making rates to meet tbe interest and sinking fund and other charges in connection with the £25,U00 loan was confirmed. On tbe motion of tbe Mayor, seconded by Cr Ewington, it was decided to take the initial steps in connection with widening of Cross Street. In connection witb tbo San Francisco disaster the following cablegram, received by tbe Premier from Mr J. B. Spreokles, a copy of whicb was forwarded to tbe Council, was read-—"Seddon, Premier, Wellington—Loss enormous, but not irreparable, belief work effective. People hopeful. Thanks of city to New Zealand Svnd to Finance Committee. United States Sub-Treasury, San Francisco.- J. B. Spreckles." The Mayor said that if it was intended to open a relief fund in Masterton, more information was desirable, as the President of the United States had intimated that outside assistance would not bo requirea. He favoured holding the matter over for two or three days to see if any further information was forthcoming. It wab eventually decided to do tbis. Cr Temple brought up tbe matter of having the Makora Stream oleared out where necessary before the winter arrived. The Engineer stated that he was preparing a report in connection with tbe Makora Stream.
