HOKITIKA, April 24. James Dowling, a carier, whilst employed late this afternoon in getting gravel from one of the Corporation's pits, was killed by a fall of earth. Deceased 'eitves a wife and three young children STEALING MONEY FROM A LETTER. WELLINGTON, April 24. John Curlett was brought before Jußtice Cooper to-dnv, having pleaded guilty to stealing a pound note from a letter in the General Post jJOffice. His Honor said that offences of this character were so inimical to public welfare that it was impossible to treat offonders in the ordinary way, or to admit them to probation. Curlett wps sentenced to three, u.onth? imprisonment.
