INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION.
"REPRESENTATION OF THE WAIRARAPA. To further consider the proposal to secure a court for the VVairarapa at the New Zeuland Inernational Exhibition, a meeting of delegates from the various towns in the W&irarapa was held in the Mastertou Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. The Mayor of Masterton (Mi* J. A. Renail) presided, and there were also present—Messrs C. E. DanieH, J. D. Cruiokshank, R. Biown (Masterton), D. Crewe (Mayor of Pahiatua), P. Feist, W. B. Alien (Carterton), M. Ro9a, J. Boyd (Martinborough), A. C. Bioknell (Mayor of Greytown), and WUdy (Greytown). A letter was received from the Secretary of the Eketahuna Chamber of Commerce stating that every effort had been made to interest settlers, and those engaged in local industries in question of representation at the Exhibition, but so far there appeared to be a deplorable indifference. The only body that seemed interested in making au exhibit was the RongokokakO' Cheese Factory. Mr Crewe mentioned that he had canvassed Pahiatua faiily well, and very satisfactory support was forthcoming. The Pahiatua County Conn oil had decided to grant an amount up to £3O, or £ for £ with the Borough Counoil. The latter body had not yet considered the matter. The private support promised was very I encouraging. Mr Thos, Horton, beside a expending £IOO in a private exhibit, was prepared to give £lO 10s, while others had guaranteed monetary help as well as exhibits. It was also probable that would join in the Walrarapa district. Mr Feist thought that the support | ooming from his distriot (Carterton) from local bodies and private sources was satisfactory. movement should be pushed forward energetically. Mr Ross reported having waited on the Featherston County Counoil and having obtained a guarantee of £lO. The individual members of the Council seemed inclined to furnish the allocation for that distriot, viz;, £SO. Mr Bioknell said that so far the Greytown Borough Council had not considered the proposition, but until further information was forthcoming he would not be prepared to> support a motion for a grant towards< the expenses iu connection with the Wairarapa Court at the Exhibition. The ohief difficulty appeared to beone of finanae. The Chairman stated that neither the Masterton Borough nor County Counoils had been officially approached on the question of a grant, but he would lay the matter before the meeting of the Borough. Council in the evening. Mr Crewe considered that definite action uhould be taken by the present meeting, as there were only five days remaining in which to make application for space. Mr Udy thought that until It had been definitely decided what amounts the local bodies intended to grant it was useless to engage space at the Exhibition or even talk fibout the matter, because in the event of local bodies refusing assistance the publio would have to be appealed to, and time did not permit of such b course being adopted. Mr Cruiokshank thought that the only ohance of the Wairarapa being represented was to get the Commissioners to extend the date of receiving applications for Bpuce. He moved that the Commissioners be asked to extend the time until May 15th, and in the meantime the various local bodies be approached and askea for assistance in the movement. Mr Bioknell seconded the motion, which was carried. The delegates present were appointed to wait on th 9 local bodiea in their districts, with the object of obtaining grants of money towards the movement. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Crewe, to allow exhibitors of all staple produce free space, but to make a charge of Is per foot for all manufactured produots. Mr Feist was appointed secretary, to' aot until May 15th. > It was decided to ask each looal body to contribute on a population basis, the total amount required for the court being £SOO. A vote of thanks was accorded the Chairman, who thanked the delegatus for their attendance,
