' He spoke strongly against the harsh and arbitrary policy of the Government towards the American colonies, and warmly urged an amicable settlement of the differences. But when Amerioa entered into a treaty i witb.Franoe, and it was proposed to the Lords to remove tne Ministers and make peaoe on any terms, Lord Chatham, though very ill, appeared in his plaoe in the House. He deolared that war, whatever the issue, would be preferable to a dishonourable peaoe. flis speech secured a majorty against the motion and the war was continued. But it was the orator's last effort for on rising again to reply to a question he suddenly collapsed. He died on May 11th, 1778).
