A MISSING ENGINEER. WORRIED OVER TURBINE MACHINERY. BRISBANE, January 23. Mr Buchanan, engineer of the new turbine steamer Binuera. intended for the Queensland coastal trade, is missing. Ho had been much worried over the turbine machinery. PROPOSED DEPORTATION. AMERICAN CONSUL INTERVENES. SYDNEY, January 23. With reference to the case of Malouf, whom the Government ordered to be deported as a prohibited immigrant, and who claims to be an Amerioan citizen, the American Consul has intervened, on his behalf, and negotiations are proceeding. A TRAGIC AFFAIR. NARROW ESCAPE OF A MAGISTRATE. Received January 24, 12.55 a.m. SYDNEY, January 23. An old man, named Shannon, who had been deprived of the old age pension, because it was found that he had not been sufficiently long in the State to be entitled to it, fired three shots at Mr Boland, a Police Magistrate, at Hiliston, wounding him twioe, but not seriously. Shannon then blew his own brains out. DEPUTATION TO MR DUAKIN. MANUFACTURERS' VIEWS. MELBOURNE, Jan. 23. A deputation waited to-day upon Mr Deakin (Federal Premier), and presented the resolutions passed at the conference of the Chambers of Manufacturers, held recently at Liaunoeston, which include a pronouncement against Socialism, trusts, dumping and in favour of preferential tariffs and tariff revision. • ———— STATE COAL CONTRACT. ROYAL COMMISSION'S REPORTS. Received January 24, 12.55 a.m. SYDNEY, January 23. The Royal Commission, appointed to enquire into the railway coal contract, has drawn up a majority report, finding that the contract entered into was not a wise one, but that there is nothing to show that it wa? improperly made. A minority ieoort holds that three of the Commissioners are blameworthy for entering into such a contract!; '
